During the 19th century critics used to point to Belshazzar, King of Babylon (Daniel 5), as evidence of the inaccuracy of the Bible. Belshazzar was unknown to history and ancient historians recorded that Nabonidus was the last king of Babylon. Then, the Nabonidus Cylinder was discovered in the ruins of the ziggurat at Ur. It contains a prayer of dedication by Nabonidus, in which he prays for his oldest son, Belshazzar. Another inscription, the Persian Verse Account of Nabonidus, further confirms that Nabonidus went on a long journey and entrusted the kingship to son. In the Bible we read about the interactions the kings of Judah and Israel had with numerous Assyrian kings (2 Kings 15:19, 17:3; 18:13, 19:37, etc). What is interesting is that we also read about Hebrew kings in the Assyrian records, such as the description in the Summary Statements of Tiglath-Pileser III of the tribute paid by King Jehoahaz (Ahaz) of Judah.
